HC Deb 06 May 1920 vol 128 c2209
12. Mr. HOUSTON

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland whether, where constables and their families are living out in private cottages, the owners have been threatened that if they are not dispossessed immediately, the owners of the houses and the constables will be dealt with by the Republican Army, and, if so, whether he proposes to take action in the matter?

Mr. HENRY

A number of cases have occurred in which owners have been threatened as indicated. The threats are usually conveyed by anonymous letter, and no evidence has so far been obtained in such cases to identify the offenders.

Mr. HOUSTON

Is there any law or authority observed or exercised in the South and West of Ireland except Sinn Fein?
