HC Deb 12 July 1920 vol 131 cc1933-4
20. Mr. WATERSON

asked the Minister of Transport whether he can see has way to grant special reduced fares to people who are compelled to travel regularly to hospitals for treatment and who now find the increased rate a terrible burden upon them?

Sir E. GEDDES

I regret that it is not practicable to grant reduced fares in such cases.

Mr. W. R. SMITH

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that in some of these cases it means three visits a week to a county hospital; that the very poorest people are involved; and that these high fares may be the means of depriving them of the medical treatment required to restore them to health?

Sir E. GEDDES

I have the greatest sympathy with them, but in the present financial condition of the railways, I cannot think it would be right to subsidise any particular kind of journey at the expense of the taxpayer.

Mr. WATERSON

Would the right hon. Gentleman consider individual cases brought to his notice?

Sir E. GEDDES

I shall be prepared to consider any case brought to my notice, but it is extremely difficult to say where you are going to make an exception.

Mr. WATERSON

Would not a doctor's certificate justify you?
