HC Deb 12 July 1920 vol 131 cc1943-4
57. Mr. GILBERT

asked the Minister of Transport whether the railway companies have yet come to any decision as to granting cheaper railway fares during the slack hours and days of the week; and can he make any statement on the subject or give a promise that the matter will be decided before the holiday season begins next month?

Sir E. GEDDES

This suggestion was first put forward mainly on the ground that trains were running almost empty in the middle of the week. The railway companies do not concur in this statement, and consider that to institute such reduced fares would result in a serious loss of revenue. I regret that in the present financial position no concession is justified which does not result in increased net revenue.
