HC Deb 12 July 1920 vol 131 c1944
58. Mr. GILBERT

asked the Minister of Transport whether his attention has been drawn to the estimated loss by the London County Council on their tramways for the forthcoming year; whether he is aware that a large part of this loss is attributed to the competition of the London General Omnibus Company at unremunerative fares; whether this company receives part of the Government subsidy under the pooling arrangements with the Metropolitan District Railway Company; and whether, in view of the seriousness of this probable loss to the ratepayers of London, he proposes to call any conference of the traffic authorities in London with a view of co-ordinating traffic in London on a remunerative basis?

Sir E. GEDDES

I am aware that the London County Council estimate a loss on their tramways, and that part of this loss is attributed to the competition of the London General Omnibus Company. The latter company benefits through the operation of the pooling agreement from the compensation paid to the Metropolitan District Railway. I am shortly meeting a deputation from the London County Council on the subject.
