HC Deb 23 February 1920 vol 125 c1297
61. Mr. ATKEY

asked the Minister of Transport whether the estimated cost of providing the staff necessary to re-open the closed exit from the Midland Railway opposite Trent Street, Nottingham, between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. is £306 16s. per annum, and between 5 a.m. and midnight £460 15s. 9d. per annum; whether he is aware that the loss in time to business people is greatly in excess of the larger of these sums: and is he prepared, on the grounds of national economy, to give instructions for the closed exit to be reopened?

Sir E. GEDDES

It was estimated by the Railway Company in August last that the re-opening of the exit referred to, without the provision of booking facilities, would cost the amounts mentioned, but it may be assumed that these sums would not now cover the expenditure involved. The reply to the last part of the question is in the negative.

Mr. ATKEY

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that there are over two thousand ex-soldiers and ex-sailors unemployed in Nottingham, and some of whom are drawing as much as £130 per year each, and if he would employ two of those men? What would it then cost to give this facility to the public?
