HC Deb 12 February 1920 vol 125 c204
20. Captain WATSON

asked the Minister of Health whether he has received representations in favour of altering the statutory date for holding municipal elections from the 1st November to the third Saturday in the month of May in each year, but when Whit Saturday falls on the third or fourth Saturday in May the election to be held upon the first Saturday in May; and whether he is prepared to take such steps as are necessary for the adoption of the proposal.

Dr. ADDISON

I have received recently representations from 23 town councils to the effect mentioned by the hon. and gallant Member. As stated, however, in my reply on the 6th November last to the hon. Member for West Middlesbrough, I think that there must be evidence of a general desire for the alteration of the dates for the municipal elections before legislation on the subject can be considered.

Sir J. D. REES

Will the right hon. Gentleman remember how much more suitable dark days are for ill-deeds be fore he makes any change?
