HC Deb 19 November 1919 vol 121 cc890-1
12. Captain COOTE

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether he is aware that five chief motor mechanics are being detained on board His Majesty's ship "Cyclops," although all 1914 and 1915 men are entitled to release; that these men were taken on board from North Russia seven weeks ago at Archangel, and are the only volunteers on the ship; whether he can state where the ship is now stationed; when she is likely to return to this country; and when these men may expert their discharge?

Dr. MACNAMARA

In the evacuation of North Russia, naval personnel were embarked in His Majesty's ships as far as possible in order to save expense of transport, and it was intended that His Majesty's ship "Cyclops" should return direct to the United Kingdom, but, in order to assist the many small craft returning from North Russia through Norwegian waters, this vessel was diverted for the time being to Aalesund. I understand, however, that His Majesty's ship "Cyclops" will probably return to home waters early in December. In any case, instructions have been sent to the ship that any demobilisable men who can be spared are to be sent home by the first opportunity which occurs.
