HC Deb 19 May 1919 vol 116 cc31-2
68. Lieut.-Colonel Sir N. GRIFFITHS

asked the Postmaster-General if he will state how many cables there are between Europe and North America; and how many of these belong to companies predominantly British?

Mr. PEASE

There are seventeen cables between Europe and North America. Of these six belong to companies which are predominantly British; but they are leased to American companies, which own seven of the remaining cables.

Sir J. BUTCHER

Can the right hon. Gentleman say how many of those cables are directly between this country and North America?

Mr. PEASE

I am afraid I must have notice with regard to that. Of the other four cables, two belong to the French, and the other two are ex-German ones.

Sir C.HENRY

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware how very badly these cables are working at the present time, and of the delay which is being caused to the prejudice of business interests?

Mr. PEASE

I am sorry to say there is some delay.
