HC Deb 06 May 1919 vol 115 cc740-1
47. Colonel YATE

asked the Prime Minister whether the Government will now consider the question of putting in hand the construction of the Forth and Clyde Canal, and works of a similar nature, with a view to the provision of adequate and suitable employment for the many demobilised soldiers out of work be fore the coming winter?

The SECRETARY for SCOTLAND (Mr. Munro)

I have been asked to reply to this question. As regards the construction of a ship canal between the Forth and Clyde, I would refer my hon. and gallant Friend to the reply given on the 6th March by the Financial Secretary to the Admiralty in answer to a question by the hon. and gallant Member for Clackmannan and East Stirling. The general problem of unemployment is receiving the constant and anxious consideration of the Government.

Colonel YATE

Considering that this scheme opens out great possibilities of housing, and garden cities, and small holdings, will the right hon. Gentleman consider this question in connection with the Bill now before the House for that purpose?

Mr. MUNRO

This is not, of course, a purely Scottish question, but I shall be very glad to confer with the Departments concerned in regard to what the hon. and gallant Member said.
