HC Deb 21 November 1918 vol 110 cc3455-6
3. Colonel THORNE

asked the Food Controller whether there is any possibility of some sugar being imported so as to supply the people with an extra amount over and above that which is now being allowed?

Mr. PARKER

The answer is in the affirmative. Every effort is being made by the Royal Commission on the Sugar Supply to obtain larger imports of sugar. But as these depend upon the availability of shipping tonnage for this purpose, and can only be shipped from distant sources of supply, it is feared that no substantial increase can be looked for in the immediate future.

Mr. T. WILSON

Can the hon. Gentleman say whether the firms which are manufacturing articles of food which approximate to the manufacture of jam will have an increased supply of sugar?

Mr. PARKER

I am afraid I cannot answer that question, but I will convey it to my right hon. Friend.
