HC Deb 18 June 1918 vol 107 cc176-7
57. Sir JOHN FLEMING

asked the First Commissioner of Works when the Aberdeen Custom House was built; what it cost, approximately; and what, apart from repairs and upkeep, has been spent upon it since its erection?

Sir A. MOND

The present Custom House in King Street was purchased in 1873 for £6,000. Since then alterations and improvements have been effected at a cost of £1,570. The old Custom House, Regent's Quay, now the Water-guard Office, was purchased in 1774 for £1,100. Electric lighting has since been introduced at a cost of £80. Some spare land at the back of the building was sold in 1879 for £700.

Sir J. FLEMING

Is the right hon. Gentleman not aware that the Customs House I asked about is not the up-town Custom House, but the Custom House on the quay, which he says was built in 1780 and which has got so crowded that business has now to be done at the Inland Revenue Office up-town and far from the docks?

Mr. SPEAKER

The hon. Member seems to be in a better position to answer his own question.
