HC Deb 18 June 1918 vol 107 c176
55. General CROFT

asked the First Commissioner of Works how many men of military age are employed on the building for the Ministry of Pensions at Chelsea?

The FIRST COMMISSIONER of WORKS (Sir Alfred Mond)

The number at the moment is thirty-eight, of whom eight are discharged soldiers or medically unfit; two are Belgian subjects, permitted to work on munitions; two are forty-four years of age; and the remainder are over forty-five, mostly between forty-eight and fifty.

56. General CROFT

asked the First Commissioner of Works how many clerks are employed in the Office of Works who are of military age and fit to serve?

Sir A. MOND

The number is forty-seven, of whom eighteen are in Grade 1 and twenty-nine in Grade 2. When I took office I personally went through the men of military age on the establishment of the Department and released a further sixty-nine men, including seven of the clerical staff, the remainder to be brought up for reconsideration. The tribunal appointed by the Ministry of National Service is at present inquiring into the necessity for the retention of these officers.

Mr. SNOWDEN

Is it a fact that the head of the Office of Works is of military age?

Sir A. MOND

No; it is not a fact.
