HC Deb 17 June 1918 vol 107 c31
46. Major NEWMAN

asked the Prime Minister whether he can to date give the number of knights, companions, members, and dames appointed to the Order of the British Empire; are those appointed to the Order given any medal or insignia; and, if so, what is the cost to the State, and does appointment to each or any branch of the Order necessitate the payment of any fee by the person appointed?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Mr. Brace)

My right hon. Friend has asked me to reply to this question. I gave the numbers of the different classes of the Order in reply to a question by the hon. Member for Harborough on the 13th instant. Persons appointed to the Order, if resident in Great Britain, are personally invested by the King with the insignia of the Order. No fee or other payment is payable by any person appointed to the Order. Any question regarding the cost to the State should be addressed to the Treasury.
