HC Deb 29 July 1918 vol 109 cc6-7
48. Major NEWMAN

asked the Prime Minister whether, during the sittings of the Imperial War Conference, an after- war joint policy with regard to the denial or extending to enemy aliens the right to acquire or hold land in any part of the Empire was considered; and has he any statement to make on the subject?

The CHANCELLOR of the EXCHEQUER (Mr. Bonar Law)

I would refer my hon. and gallant Friend to the statement which appeared in the Press this morning.

49. Major NEWMAN

asked the Prime Minister whether it is the intention of the Government, before the Dissolution of Parliament, to deal with the acquiring and holding by enemy aliens, persons of enemy origin, and neutrals, of land in the United Kingdom both during the duration of the War and for a term of years subsequently?

Mr. BONAR LAW

I have nothing to add to the answer which I gave to my hon. and gallant Friend on the 24th of June last.

Sir R. COOPER

May I ask the right hon. Gentleman what is the difficulty on behalf of the Government of stating a definite policy on the question of the ownership of land?

Mr. BONAR LAW

If my hon. Friend will read the notice that appears this morning in the Press, he will see it is being considered.

Major NEWMAN

Is it not a fact that what appears in the Press this morning deals with the Imperial War Conference, and not with the acquisition of land in Great Britain?

Mr. BONAR LAW

The question of the hon. and gallant Gentleman deals with land in the Empire.
