§ 21. Mr. KINGasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether the Government has considered the economy in public money which might be effected by abolishing the offices of Lord Chief Justice and Master of the Rolls under Section 33 of the Judicature Act of 1873; and whether action will be taken to abolish these offices?
§ Mr. BONAR LAWThe answer is in the negative.
§ Mr. KINGDoes the right hon. Gentleman not recognise we have now a unique opportunity of effecting a permanent economy in the public service?
§ Mr. BONAR LAWNo, Sir; I do not think the hon. Member has considered this subject. It is perfectly impossible to do away with these offices.
§ Mr. PRINGLEIs it essential to maintain the Mastership of the Rolls?
§ Mr. BON AR LAWYes, absolutely essential. The Statute quoted by my hon. Friend never contemplated the abolition of these offices.
§ Mr. KINGHas the matter been considered in the light of the fact that both offices are practically vacant, or liable to be vacant?
§ Mr. BONAR LAWOf course it has been considered. but the fact that the offices are vacant is no reason why they should not be filled.
