HC Deb 07 August 1918 vol 109 cc1355-6
63. Major CHAPPLE

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether his attention has been called to advice on relief from Income Tax, in which it is stated that where the income overtops a point where the tax goes up a taxpayer can make a present of a few inconvenient pounds and pay tax on the lower level; and if he will state what is the largest amount a taxpayer may save in taxation by this manœuvre?

Mr. BONAR LAW

I have not seen the advice to which the hon. and gallant Member refers, but it is not the case that a taxpayer can reduce his Income Tax liability in any year imply by making a present.
