HC Deb 07 August 1918 vol 109 cc1322-3
3. Colonel YATE

asked the Secretary of State for India if he can now state the result of his conference with the War Office on the subject of allowing senior officers on the unemployed list of the Indian Army to be placed on the retired list?

Mr. MONTAGU

I regret that I have not yet received a reply from the War Office?

Colonel YATE

How is it that this matter is in the hands of the War Office? Has not the Secretary of State for India full powers to settle questions relating to the retirement of unemployed officers of the Indian Army?

Mr. MONTAGU

The ultimate decision will, of course, rest with the Council of India, The financial considerations will require careful examination, and it is necessary, as it affects in similar cases the British Army, to consult the War Office.

Colonel YATE

May we hope for a speedy settlement of this case?

Mr. MONTAGU

I think it will not be very long before I get an answer from the War Office.

Colonel YATE

Will the right hon. Gentleman communicate it to me?

Mr. MONTAGU

I will let my hon. and gallant Friend know as soon as I get it.
