HC Deb 23 April 1918 vol 105 cc830-1
3. Mr. LEES-SMITH

asked the Undersecretary of State for War whether any of the societies dealing with venereal disease were consulted before the enactment of the new Regulation 40 d, under the Defence of the Realm Acts, dealing with women suffering from venereal disease?

Mr. MACPHERSON

I am informed that it was considered unnecessary to do this, for the reasons stated in my reply on Tuesday last to my hon. Friend.

Mr. LEES-SMITH

Did the War Office take into consideration the fact that the Royal Commission on Venereal Diseases— the recent one— reported against every Regulation of this kind on the ground that it did nothing to diminish venereal disease?

Mr. MACPHERSON

That was not the question which ray hon. Friend asked. As I stated to him on Tuesday last, the attitude of these societies was very well known to the War Cabinet, because they announced their attitude on the Criminal Law Amendment Bill.,
