HC Deb 11 April 1918 vol 104 cc1642-3
69. Mr. BILLING

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, having regard to the desirability for distributing the financial burden of this War on all those who are seeking protection in these islands, he will consider the desirability of instituting a poll tax on all aliens?

Mr. BONAR LAW

The answer is in the negative.

Mr. BILLING

Surely the right hon. Gentleman will give the question of the taxation of aliens some little attention between now and the Budget?

Mr. BONAR LAW

I am willing to give attention to anything that will produce revenue, but I am unwilling to put a special tax on aliens who may be Allies.

Mr. BILLING

What is the matter with taxing our enemies? The country is full of them.
