HC Deb 09 April 1918 vol 104 cc1308-9
6. Mr. KING

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War whether Whitehall Farm, Cove, near Farnborough, is being cultivated by the War Office; whether this farm is owned by the War Office; how many acres does it contain; how many soldiers are there employed; how many horses are employed; what crops were raised there last season; what amount of potatoes and off how many acres; whether there are about 300 acres in this district owned by the War Office; are beagles kennelled there; and what previous experience in agriculture is possessed by the officer in charge?

Mr. MACPHERSON

Whitehall Farm, Cove, was until the 25th March cultivated by tenants, but on that date was taken over by the military authorities. The farm is War Department property, and its area is 360 acres. Ten soldiers from an agricultural company have been employed, and paid by the tenants under the usual Regulations. Twenty unfit Army horses are employed at present with a view to hardening them for service. The crops raised last season consisted of 573¾ tons of "ware" potatoes off sixty acres. Beagles arc not kennelled on the farm. The officer in charge has been a farmer practically all his life.
