HC Deb 14 June 1917 vol 94 c1099
2. Mr. LEES SMITH

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether, on 5th October last, the Italian Minister at Athens informed the Director-General of the Greek Foreign Office that the occupation of various towns in Northern Epirus by Italian troops had one exclusive object, namely, to secure the military safety of the Italian Army of Valona, and that it was not in any way to be regarded as modifying the international status of North Epirus as laid down in official declarations; and whether the Italian Government still adhere to this policy?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Lord Robert Cecil)

I understand that an assurance of the nature referred to was given by the Italian Minister to the Greek Government on or about the date mentioned, and I feel sure that the Italian Government have no intention of disregarding their undertakings in the matter.

Mr. LEES SMITH

Are we to understand from that reply that the Italian Government has not declared any permanent Protectorate over that district?

Lord R. CECIL

Perhaps my hon. Friend will give me notice of that question.
