HC Deb 13 June 1917 vol 94 cc946-7
87. Mr. FELL

asked the Minister of Munitions if any progress has been made in arranging that those engaged in munition works and other industries connected with the War shall have holidays of, say, ten days arranged for them at suitable times during the summer season in the interest of their health and the better future output of work?

Mr. KELLAWAY

It is my right hon. Friend's intention that munition workers and those engaged in other industries connected with the War shall have the benefit of as long a holiday this year as is compatible with the adequate maintenance of output. As far as practicable, it is proposed that the holidays should be taken at the time of the customary district holiday, and my right hon. Friend is in communication with the Board of Trade in regard to the provision of the necessary travelling facilities. As regards the districts where holidays are taken in the early summer, the arrangements are almost complete and inquiries are being pressed forward in regard to other districts.

Mr. FELL

Cannot something more definite be stated, and cannot the dates of the holidays be published, so that the people who participate in them may have the pleasure of anticipation of the holidays they are going to have and so that they may be able to save money?

Mr. KELLAWAY

The dates are perfectly well known, because they are the dates of the usual holidays in the districts. It is not proposed to interfere with them.
