§ 85. Mr. GULLANDasked the Minister of Munitions whether, in view of resignations from the Board of Control (Liquor Traffic) and of the large operations of the Board in Scotland, he will take the opportunity of appointing a Scotsman in sympathy with the feeling in Scotland in favour of prohibition?
§ Mr. KELLAWAYMembers of the Board are selected on account of general fitness to discharge the work of the Board rather than as representing any particular section of opinion. My right hon. Friend is not satisfied that there is any ground for departing from this practice.
§ Mr. PRINGLEWill the Ministry take steps to see that the Board do not pay exorbitant prices for the public-houses, they acquire?
§ Mr. KELLAWAYI think those steps, are taken.
§ Mr. PRINGLEOh, no! Is it not the ease that they refuse to submit the prices, of the public-houses to the Defence of the Realm Purchases Committee?
§ Mr. KELLAWAYNo.
§ Mr. MILLARIs there not on the Board at the present moment a member representing the brewing industry, and is there any intention of putting on a gentleman to represent the views of the Scottish people?
§ Mr. KELLAWAYThere is no member on the Board representing the brewing industry as such. He is there as being qualified for the work the Board has to do and not as representing any particular interest.
§ Mr. MOLTENOWould it not be an advantage to the smooth working of the Board of Control in Scotland if some members were put on the Board who knew something of Scottish feeling and views in regard to the liquor traffic and how it should be managed?
§ Mr. KELLAWAYNo Sir; there is no reason for supposing that Scottish feeling and opinion are not adequately represented on the Board.
