§ 18. Mr. LYNCHasked the Chief Secretary for Ireland whether, in view of the difficulties attending sea transport, he will have a Report made as to the availability of Cappa Pier, Kilrush, West Clare; and, if the Report be favourable, whether he will bring the matter to the attention of the Controller of Shipping and of the Admiralty?
§ Sir G. CAVECappa Pier, situated in the Shannon Estuary about one mile south of the town of Kilrush, is an excellently constructed masonry pier with a top width of 37 feet and a depth of about 8 feet at low water. To make it available for ships of 5,000 to 6,000 tons drawing 24 feet of water would require an extension of 400 feet and the construction of a tee head, and even then vessels could only discharge their cargoes one at a time. Moreover, the pier is exposed to heavy seas during westerly gales. I will, however, call the attention of the Shipping Controller to the hon. Member's suggestion.
