HC Deb 02 August 1916 vol 85 cc300-1
62. Mr. P. WHITE

asked the Home Secretary whether there is any intention to remove the Countess Markiewicz from Mountjoy Prison, Dublin, to some prison in this country; if he is aware that she is receiving instructions in Catholic doctrine with a view of entering that Church; whether, pending the completion of those instructions, he will say any contemplated order for her removal; and if he will state whether the Russian and American Governments have communicated with the Government of this country as to the evidence upon which she was convicted?

66. Mr. BYRNE

asked the Home Secretary whether any instructions have been issued to remove Countess Markiewicz from Dublin to an English prison; if so, will he say why this course is to be adopted; if he is aware that her husband is serving with the Russian Army; and if until his return or her release the countess will not be removed from Ireland?

Mr. SAMUEL

All the other prisoners connected with the rebellion have been removed to prisons in England, and it is intended to remove the Countess Markiewicz also. She registered herself at Mountjoy Prison as a Roman Catholic, and will therefore be treated as a Roman Catholic prisoner in England. There is a Roman Catholic priest attached to the English prison where she is going. I am informed that her husband is serving with the Russian Army. No communication has been received from either the Russian or the American Government.

Mr. BYRNE

Can the right hon. Gentleman say where will this lady be transferred?

Mr. SAMUEL

No, Sir; I am not quite sure.
