HC Deb 23 September 1915 vol 74 c559
43. Mr. THOMAS

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that a driver of the 7th London Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, was a few weeks ago sent home from France owing to his time, including the additional year which a soldier can be held to serve under national emergency, having expired, and that upon reporting himself at head-quarters in England he was informed he would have to serve until August, 1916, under the provisions of a recent Army Council Order; and whether an Army Order exists which extends the period of service of a soldier without any reference whatever to his willingness to serve?

Mr. TENNANT

If my hon. Friend will send me the name of the man and his regimental number, full inquiry will be made. There is no Army Order in existence extending the term of a soldier's service beyond that for which he is legally liable.
