HC Deb 12 October 1915 vol 74 cc1181-2
21. Mr. P. WHITE

asked the Financial Secretary to the War Office whether, having regard to the erroneous impression created in the minds of the farmers of county Meath by the purchasing agent of the Government to the effect that he had the power and would exercise it to requisition fodder at his own price, he will remove that gentleman to a different sphere; and whether, in future, agents purchasing on behalf of the Government will hand vendors a printed statement as to the conditions of sale and purchase?

Mr. FORSTER

The officer referred to is not now in the Meath district. All purchasing officers hand to the vendor a purchase note which clearly sets forth the terms of the purchase. The purchase note is signed both by the vendor and by the purchasing officer.

22. Mr. P. WHITE

asked the Financial Secretary to the War Office whether any farmers in Ireland who sold their hay under what they regarded as compulsion to the Government agent at inadequate prices have the right to appeal to the County Court judge; and, if so, even if they through ignorance of their rights are technically late, will no objection be made-by the authorities?

Mr. FORSTER

I am informed that no purchases have been made in Ireland other than by purchase note agreed to and signed by the vendor. No question of appeal to the County Court therefore arises.
