HC Deb 11 February 1915 vol 69 cc716-7
59. Mr. TYSON WILSON

asked whether assisting a civilian contractor in the erection of a building for the Young Men's Christian Association, and generally assisting contractors, comes within the definition of military duty?

Mr. TENNANT

The work which a soldier may be called upon to perform in the course of military duty depends on the exigencies of the Service at the time, and it is not always possible, without reference to circumstances, to say that a given duty does or does not come within the scope of the term "military duty." In the case which my hon. Friend has, I think, in mind the order given to him was a lawful order, and it was one which it was his duty to obey.

Mr. TYSON WILSON

Was there any particular urgency in connection with the erection of this building?

Mr. TENNANT

Yes, Sir.
