HC Deb 21 April 1915 vol 71 cc254-5
19. Mr. JOYNSON-HICKS

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War whether the military authorities have forbidden friendly aliens, such as Frenchmen, Russians, and Americans, to enter the Isle of Wight, but that this restriction does not apply to Portsmouth, Southsea, or Southampton; and whether, in the interests of the island, he can see his way to relax the restrictions during the coming season?

Mr. TENNANT

Under existing rules the entry of all aliens into the Isle of Wight, unless provided with a permit issued by the Home Office, is prohibited. All aliens in Portsmouth are subject to the usual restrictions applicable under the Aliens Act in prohibited areas, and can be removed therefrom. There are obvious differences between the position of the Isle of Wight and places on the mainland, which render additional precautions desirable.

Mr. JOYNSON-HICKS

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the local authorities in the Island are very disturbed about this matter? As the hon. Member for the Island is away on Red Cross work, will the right hon. Gentleman allow me to bring a small deputation from the Island to see him in order to ascertain whether anything can be done consistent with military exigencies?

Mr. TENNANT

Of course I should like to receive the deputation.
