HC Deb 21 April 1915 vol 71 c254
16. Mr. BENTHAM

asked whether the dependants of the seven soldiers recently drowned at Gainsborough whilst carrying out orders will receive the same allowances as if they had been killed at the front?

Mr. BAKER

Yes, Sir.

17. Mr. BENTHAM

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War whether, now that he has ascertained who was to blame for the death by drowning of seven soldiers whilst carrying out orders at Gainsborough, he will relieve the officer concerned from his command?

Mr. TENNANT

The officer responsible has had a terrible lesson which will remain with him all his life. His error was one of judgment. I do not think it would be for the good of the Service to remove him. It is not proposed to take any disciplinary action in this very regrettable case.
