HC Deb 27 November 1914 vol 68 c1494
31. Mr. MORRELL

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that in cases where men break down in health after joining the New Army they are discharged and sent home without further provision, with the result that they are often reduced to distress in addition to suffering loss of health; and whether he will see that in cases where it is shown that the discharge is due to loss of health arising from pneumonia, or other causes which cannot be attributed to any fault of the man who is incapacitated, some suitable provision shall be made to assist such men on their discharge?

Mr. BAKER

Grants in such cases are provided for in the Regulations, if the disability is due to service, and steps are being taken to ensure that there is no failure to apply the Regulations correctly.

Mr. MORRELL

Is my hon. Friend aware that there are many cases in which men have given up their jobs to enlist and are now left absolutely destitute, and could he not do something in this matter?

Mr. BAKER

The Regulations provide for grants in those cases.
