HC Deb 17 November 1914 vol 68 cc321-2
38. Mr. TYSON

WILSON asked the Under-Secretary for War whether he has received a complaint that Mr. Randolph Meech, of Hamworthy, Poole, contractor for the supply of doors and frames for soldiers' huts, is not paying the proper rate of wages to the carpenters in his employ, paying only 6d. an hour instead of 8½d.; and whether he is having full and prompt inquiries made into the matter?

Mr. BAKER

The firm in question holds no direct contract with the War Office, but certain materials have been bought from them by two contractors who have undertaken to supervise the erection of huts on behalf of the War Office at Weymouth and Wareham. Their attention has been drawn to the complaint referred to by the hon. Member.

Mr. TYSON WILSON

Does the contract contain the Fair-Wages Clause?

Mr. BAKER

I must ask notice of that question.
