HC Deb 17 November 1914 vol 68 c320
35. Mr. CHIOZZA

MONEY asked the Under-Secretary for War whether he is aware that on 10th October Major-General A. H. Gordon, General Officer Commanding at Aldershot, issued a notice headed "Instructions to canteen tenants," in which he stated that it had been brought to notice that the price charged in canteens in that command for groceries, etc., were in many cases exorbitant, and out of all proportion to the current market rates in London, and that among the most noteworthy were the following: Bloaters over 500 per cent. above market rates, kippers over 150 per cent., onions over 100 per cent., potatoes over 30 per cent., salt over 150 per cent., vinegar over 100 per cent., margarine over 35 per cent., and milk over 25 per cent.; and if he will state the names of the canteen tenants who have been guilty of these overcharges, and if their contracts have been cancelled?

Mr. BAKER

I am informed that this notice was issued under a misapprehension and was subsequently withdrawn, as the information given to the General Officer Commanding at Aldershot was found to be incorrect.
