HC Deb 11 May 1914 vol 62 c725
75. Mr. BRIDGEMAN

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will state how many temporary clerks appeared before the Commissioners for permission to sit for the examination for permanent employment in the Labour Exchange (Unemployment Insurance) Department on each occasion; and how many passed on each occasion?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD of TRADE (Mr. Robertson)

The numbers of temporary clerks interviewed by the Civil Service Commissioners on the five occasions on which they have sat for this purpose were 2, 642, 147, 577, and 423, respectively. The numbers passed by the Commissioners at the interviews, subject to passing the subsequent written qualifying examinations, were 0,355, 84, 373, and 148, respectively.

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

Has there not been a subsequent session of the Commissioners, at which 200 or more temporary clerks were seen, of whom only six were passed to sit at the qualifying examination?

Mr. ROBERTSON

I am not aware of it.
