HC Deb 07 May 1914 vol 62 c435
52. Mr. JAMES HOGGE

asked the President of the Board of Agriculture how many charwomen are employed in his Department; whether they work thirty hours a week for a weekly remuneration of 12s., or less than 5d. an hour; whether they receive any food; whether they receive any allowance for getting to and from the offices twice each day; and, if so, whether he will consider raising their wages?

Mr. HERBERT LEWIS

The number of charwoman employed by the Board is twenty-two. The answer to the second and fifth parts of the question is in the affirmative, and to the third and fourth parts in the negative.

Mr. HOGGE

Do we take it that the Board of Agriculture consider that less than 5d. an hour for thirty hours a week is a wage which they care to be judged by?

Mr. H. LEWIS

I have already informed my hon. Friend that the President of the Board of Agriculture is considering the question of revising the wages.
