HC Deb 07 May 1914 vol 62 cc435-6
39. Lord NINIAN CRICHTON-STUART

asked the President of the Board of Trade if a number of Labour Exchanges are being closed in South Wales; if so, what is the number and where are they situated; and whether he can state the reason for such closing?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD of TRADE (Mr. Robertson)

It has been decided to substitute local agencies of the unemployment fund for Labour Exchanges at Pontlottyn, Porth, Treorchy and Ferndale. The Aberkenfig Exchange has also recently been closed. These Exchanges are being closed because there is not enough work to be performed by them which cannot equally well be performed by a local agency. Similar changes are being made in certain districts outside Wales.

Lord NINIAN CRICHTON-STUART

What is the exact difference in status between an agency and an Exchange?

Mr. ROBERTSON

It is a more limited organisation. It can do its work at less cost and with a less stall.
