HC Deb 04 May 1914 vol 62 c27
54. Mr. KING

asked whether it is the policy and practice of the Government to have regard to the Resolution passed by this House on 11th April, 1899, in making ecclesiastical appointments?

The PRIME MINISTER

Yes, Sir. It is the practice of the Crown to require an assurance that the nominee is prepared to obey the bishop of the diocese (subject always to the provisions of Statute law) in matters of discipline and ceremonial.

Mr. KING

Does that pledge apply also to appointments of Army and Navy chaplains, or merely to appointments to livings within the gift of the Crown?

The PRIME MINISTER

I am speaking only of the livings in the gift of the Crown. I will inquire as to the others.

Mr. KING

Will the right hon. Gentleman inquire as to its special applicability to the Department of the Secretary for War?
