HC Deb 04 May 1914 vol 62 c41
92. Sir JOHN JARDINE

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland whether the Act of Parliament, 60 Geo. III. and 1 Geo. IV., c. 1, passed to prevent the training of persons to the use of arms and to the practice of military evolutions and exercise has been in any case enforced in Belfast or other places in Ulster as regards meetings and assemblies under the direction of a general on the retired list of the Indian Army; and whether, in any instance of such a meeting or assembly, lawful authority was obtained as provided by the Statute from His Majesty or the lieutenant or two justices of the peace?

Mr. BIRRELL

The answer to the first paragraph of the question is in the negative. With regard to the second paragraph, the hon. Member has already been informed that the authority of two justices of the peace required by the Statute referred to would not extend to drillings for an unlawful purpose.
