HC Deb 04 May 1914 vol 62 cc40-1
69. Sir J. D. REES

asked the Secretary of State for War whether officers who are permitted to disappear during a political crisis are on half or on full pay; whether they are subject to be recalled to duty and, if so, for what period of time; whether the period of disappearance counts for pension and leave; and when their status will be defined in the Army Regulations?

The PRIME MINISTER

The fact of a political crisis existing has no bearing on this question. As regards the rest of the question, I can add nothing to what I have already stated in the House. Such cases must be exceptional and each treated on its own merits, and I do not think they can be defined by Army Regulations.

Sir J. D. REES

Is not the creation of a new status for British officers of sufficient importance to justify a question and require a reply?

The PRIME MINISTER

I have given the reply. I said that this is not a matter which may be dealt with by Army Regulations.

Sir J. D. REES

How can this matter be settled otherwise than by Army Regulation?

The PRIME MINISTER

I said that such cases must be exceptional, and each must be dealt with on its own merits.

Mr. J. HOGGE

Will the right hon. Gentleman also take into account the disappearing and reappearing Member?
