§ 69. Sir J. D. REESasked the Secretary of State for War whether officers who are permitted to disappear during a political crisis are on half or on full pay; whether they are subject to be recalled to duty and, if so, for what period of time; whether the period of disappearance counts for pension and leave; and when their status will be defined in the Army Regulations?
§ The PRIME MINISTERThe fact of a political crisis existing has no bearing on this question. As regards the rest of the question, I can add nothing to what I have already stated in the House. Such cases must be exceptional and each treated on its own merits, and I do not think they can be defined by Army Regulations.
§ Sir J. D. REESIs not the creation of a new status for British officers of sufficient importance to justify a question and require a reply?
§ The PRIME MINISTERI have given the reply. I said that this is not a matter which may be dealt with by Army Regulations.
§ Sir J. D. REESHow can this matter be settled otherwise than by Army Regulation?
§ The PRIME MINISTERI said that such cases must be exceptional, and each must be dealt with on its own merits.
§ Mr. J. HOGGEWill the right hon. Gentleman also take into account the disappearing and reappearing Member?
