HC Deb 12 February 1914 vol 58 c324
42. Mr. WILLIAM THORNE

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will state when the Labour Exchange building in the Barking Road, Canning Town, will be commenced; if he is aware that on the 28th April, 1913, he promised that he would see that the building was pushed along; and whether he intends taking any action in the matter?

Mr. BENN

Owing to the severe economies which it has been necessary to make in the Board's estimates for 1914–15 it has not been possible to make provisions for commencing this work. Additional temporary premises for women and juveniles have, however, been acquired, and it is proposed to extend the existing premises for men. It is hoped that the necessary work in this connection will be completed by the middle of March.

Mr. W. THORNE

Can the hon. Member give any assurance as to when the work will be commenced? The land was purchased about three years ago and nothing has been done up to the present?

Mr. BENN

I am afraid I cannot make any promise.
