HC Deb 04 August 1914 vol 65 c1903
43. Mr. HUNT

asked the Home Secretary whether he is aware that motor omnibus conductors have to be on duty at 9 a.m. till 11.15 p.m., one hour and three-quarters being allowed out of it for meals; and as this is more than twelve hours a day, whether he can take any steps to get these very long hours reduced?

Mr. McKENNA

This subject was investigated by the Select Committee on motor traffic, when evidence showed that about nine and three-quarter hours are actually spent on the omnibus, the remainder being relief time. I am not aware that conditions have since changed for the worse, and I believe there have recently been negotiations on the subject between the London General Omnibus Company and the Workers' Union. It is not a matter in which I have any authority to interfere.
