HC Deb 23 April 1914 vol 61 cc1080-1
15. Mr. GLADSTONE

asked the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether, in accordance with his undertaking in connection with the recent Dublin disturbances, any disciplinary measures have yet been taken with any members of the Royal Irish Constabulary or the Dublin Metropolitan Police Force; if so, in how many cases and to what extent; and whether he is yet able to state what compensation has been paid to those injured or whose property was injured by unjustifiable assault at the hands of police constables?

Mr. BIRRELL

A disciplinary inquiry has been in progress for some time into the action of the police in Dublin whose conduct was condemned in the Report of the Dublin Disturbances Commission, but the inquiry is not fully completed, pending the result of civil proceedings which have been taken against some of the Dublin police for damages alleged to have been done by them. The compensation which I stated in this House on the 18th February last I considered ought to be given has been paid.

Mr. GLADSTONE

Would the right hon. Gentleman say what compensation has been paid?

Mr. BIRRELL

Yes, Sir. Compensation has been paid amounting to £42 9s. 4d. to twenty-four persons, and, in addition, compensation amounting to £21 3s. 8d. has been paid to the Dublin Corporation.
