HC Deb 28 April 1913 vol 52 cc778-9
9. Mr. C. BATHURST

asked the President of the Board of Agriculture how many agricultural research scholarships are being awarded by the Board in the current year; what is the amount of these scholarships; what qualifications are required in candidates for them; how those qualifications are tested by the Board; and what is the process by which application is made for them?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

Twelve research scholarships of the annual value of £150 for three years are offered by the Board during the current year. I shall be pleased to send to the hon. Member a copy of the form of application, which explains the nature of the qualifications required in candidates for the scholarships. The applications will be considered by a special committee, who will report on them to the Board.

Mr. C. BATHURST

May I ask whether there is any process of nomination of those candidates, and, if so, who is qualified to nominate?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

There is no process of nomination, but recommendations from universities and other institutions with which the candidates have been connected of course have great weight.
