HC Deb 28 October 1912 vol 43 c32
65. Lord NINIAN CRICHTON-STUART

asked the amount of revenue derived from the advertisements in the books of stamps issued by the Post Office; and where the returns for such revenue may be found in the accounts?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

It would not be in the public interest to state the sum paid to the Post Office by the contractor for advertising rights, but it is only just sufficient to cover the cost of manufacturing and distributing the books. It is included in the Finance Accounts of the United Kingdom under the general heading "Postal Receipts," sub-heading "Miscellaneous Receipts."

Lord N. CRICHTON-STUART

Why is it impossible to give this sum?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

There are two reasons. One is that it would very much embarrass us in dealing with tenders from other contractors if they had as an indication of the sum they should tender the sum which had previously been tendered; and, secondly, the contractor would be very much embarrassed if all the persons to whom he applied to put advertisements in Post Office books knew precisely how much he was paying the Post Office for his advertising rights.
