BATHURSTasked the President of the Board of Agriculture whether, in view of the increasing dependence of British graziers upon distant sources of supply for store cattle, owing to the slaughter of calves by milk - selling farmers, and of the ever-present possibility of such sources of supply being cut off owing to disease or otherwise, the Board will take any, and, if any, what, steps to put a premium upon the preservation and rearing of calves?
§ Mr. RUNCIMANThe Board have on several occasions recently directed public attention to the importance of rearing sufficient heifer calves in order to meet the increasing demand for milch cows, and further steps will be taken from time to-time, as opportunity offers. An article on the subject will be issued in the next issue 1809 of the Board's Journal. The subject will also be kept in view in connection with the schemes now under consideration for the development of cattle breeding.
§ 66. Mr. SANDERSasked what number of Irish store cattle entered the English ports during the four weeks ending 4th November last, and what number entered during the same period last year?
§ Mr. RUNCIMANTwo thousand two hundred and sixty-four Irish cattle, described as store cattle, were landed in England from 7th October last up to yesterday. The number landed in the month of October last year was 61,794.
