HC Deb 04 November 1912 vol 43 cc842-3
94. Mr. CHARLES CRAIG

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland whether he has received any report from the constabulary that the crowd assembled outside the Theatre Royal, Limerick, at the close of the Unionist meeting on the 10th October was so threatening in their attitude towards Mr. F. E. Kearney, a Roman Catholic, Unionist speaker at the meeting, that the constabulary deemed it advisable not to allow him to leave the building for more than an hour as, in their opinion, owing to the hostility of the crowd towards him, grievous bodily harm would have been done him; and whether Mr. Kearney has been having police protection at night since the meeting?

Mr. BIRRELL

Mr. Kearney, at the conclusion of the meeting referred to, on the advice of the police, remained for some time in the building. This course was considered advisable owing to the presence of an angry crowd outside the theatre. For some evenings after the meeting special attention was paid to his house by the police with a view to preventing the windows being broken.
