HC Deb 04 November 1912 vol 43 c842
92. Mr. HUGH BARRIE

asked the Secretary for Ireland whether, in view of the dissatisfaction existing in Ireland amongst national school teachers in reference to the new methods of inspection which have been instituted by the National Board, and which has now been accentuated by the recent dismissal of Mr. Mansfield, he is prepared to appoint a Royal Commission or Select Committee to inquire into the whole subject?

Mr. BIRRELL

I am aware that since the substitution of the present system of inspection for the old results system in 1900 some teachers have, from time to time, complained of undue severity on the part of the inspectors, and I am considering whether this present state of facts would justify the appointment of a Commission, and whether the time is opportune for such an inquiry. I hardly think it is.
