HC Deb 18 June 1912 vol 39 cc1486-7
55. Mr. CASSEL

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether a caterer employing one person only, who is a relative, cannot on one day of the week employ such relative after half-past one in the afternoon, although both employer and employed desire to continue the employment, and although the main business of the day is done after one o'clock; whether any representations on this subject have been made to him; and whether he would consider the advisability of amending the Shops Act, 1911, in this respect?

The SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Mr. McKenna)

The Act requires that every shop assistant must be given a half-holiday on one weekday in each week. As regards the second part of the question, I would refer the hon. and learned Member to the answer which I gave on the 9th of May to the hon. Member for Harwich.
