HC Deb 13 June 1912 vol 39 c1057
76. Mr. HAROLD SMITH

asked the Home Secretary whether he will consider an extension of the Shops Act, 1912, to such persons as bakers, cooks, and kitchen staff engaged in bakehouses and restaurants who, though working on premises which come within the scope of the Act, are now excluded from its benefits by reason of the fact that they are not wholly or mainly employed in the serving of customers?

Mr. McKENNA

The Shops Act has only just come into force, and it is much too early to consider the question of an extension of its provisions. Some experience of its working will be necessary before further legislation is undertaken. I may point out that bakehouses are subject to the provisions of the Factory Act.
