HC Deb 13 June 1912 vol 39 cc1057-8
83. Mr. KEIR HARDIE

asked the President of the Local Government Board whether his attention has been called to the action of the Croydon Board of Guardians in reducing the out-relief given to Mrs. Bushell, a widow with five children, the youngest being under six months old, from 9s. to 8s. a week; whether the guardians alleged that the reason for this was that the woman's mother-in-law, who is bed-ridden, was in receipt of an old age pension; and whether he proposes to take any steps to secure that the Old Age Pension Act shall not be used to penalise daughters-in-law who require to come upon the Poor Law?

Mr. BURNS

I am making inquiries into this matter, and will communicate with the hon. Member.
